Page speed & Core Web Vitals: the quiet reason you lose customers

Most owners judge their website by how it looks. Google and your customers judge it by how fast it feels. A slow site is the quietest way to lose business — nobody emails to say "your page took too long", they just leave.

How much does speed really matter?

A lot. About 53% of mobile visitors abandon a page that takes longer than three seconds to load (Google). Every extra second of load time chips away at enquiries and sales. And because speed is mobile-first — where most local customers are — the damage lands exactly where it hurts.

What are Core Web Vitals?

Core Web Vitals are three real-world metrics Google uses to measure experience, and they feed into rankings:

  • LCP (Largest Contentful Paint) — how quickly the main content appears. Aim for under 2.5 seconds.
  • INP (Interaction to Next Paint) — how fast the page responds when tapped.
  • CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift) — how much the page jumps around while loading.

Here is the opportunity: only around 42% of mobile sites pass all three Core Web Vitals (HTTP Archive / CrUX, 2026). Most of your competitors are slow. A genuinely fast site stands out — to Google and to customers.

Practical ways to get fast

  • Right-size images. Huge photos are the number-one cause of slow sites. Compress them and set width and height so the layout does not jump.
  • Cut the bloat. Every heavy theme, slider and tracking script adds delay. Keep only what earns its place.
  • Cache and compress. Enable gzip and long-lived browser caching so repeat visits are instant.
  • Load fonts and scripts smartly. Defer non-critical scripts; do not let a font block the whole page.
  • Host well. Reliable hosting and a CDN make a measurable difference.

Speed is a business metric, not a tech detail

Faster pages keep more visitors, convert more of them, and rank better — a rare win that helps every channel at once. If your site takes more than a couple of seconds to become usable on a phone, that is not a cosmetic issue. It is customers you are paying to attract and then quietly losing at the door.
