Local SEO: how to actually show up in "near me" searches

When someone searches "web designer near me" or "bakery near me", they are not browsing — they are ready to act. Around 76% of people who run a local search on their phone visit a business within a day (Google). Local SEO is simply the work of making sure that business is you.

1. Claim and complete your Google Business Profile

This is the single highest-return task. For most local queries, the map pack sits above everything else. Claim your profile, verify it, and fill in every field: correct category, hours, service areas, phone, website and real photos. An incomplete profile quietly loses you customers who never even see you.

2. Keep your NAP identical everywhere

Your Name, Address and Phone number must match exactly across your website, Google, and any directory. Inconsistency confuses search engines and customers alike — and 62% of consumers say they would avoid a business if they found incorrect information online (BrightLocal). Small mismatches do real damage.

3. Earn reviews, and reply to them

Reviews are both a ranking signal and a trust signal. You do not need hundreds — a steady trickle of genuine reviews, each answered politely, tells Google and customers that you are active and reliable. Make asking for a review part of your normal handover.

4. Put your location into your website

  • Name your city and service areas naturally in your page titles and content.
  • Add local business schema so search engines read your details cleanly.
  • Create a page for each core service, written for how locals actually search.

5. Do not forget speed

Local intent is overwhelmingly mobile, and mobile users are impatient — 53% will leave a page that takes more than three seconds to load (Google). A fast, mobile-first site is not separate from SEO; it is part of it.

The compounding payoff

Local SEO is not a one-week trick. Movement often shows in four to eight weeks, and competitive terms take longer. But unlike ads, the visibility you build keeps working. In a market where about 84% of consumers searched for a local business in the last three months (BrightLocal, 2026), showing up consistently in "near me" results is one of the most durable advantages a small business can own.
